The Alfond Scholarship Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a goal of increasing Maine’s educational attainment through increased college savings.  ASF is a supporting organization of the following Maine educational and non-profit entities:  Educate Maine, Maine Community College System, University of Maine System, Maine Community Foundation, the Mitchell Institute and the Finance Authority of Maine

The Alfond Scholarship Foundation was created in 2008, when the Harold Alfond Foundation made a commitment to provide $500 for college to every Maine resident baby. By the end of 2013, close to $11.5 million had been invested for nearly 23,000 Maine children.

Beginning in 2014, the Alfond Scholarship Foundation is embarking on a strategic initiative to automatically enroll all Maine resident babies in the program. As a result of removing all barriers to participation – including the prior requirement that parents open a 529 college investing account by the child’s first birthday in order to receive the grant – the Foundation expects to provide in excess of $6 million to more than 12,000 Maine babies annually from this year forward.

Harold Alfond believed that every child born in Maine should have an opportunity for higher education. Thanks to his hard work and generosity, all Maine resident babies now have a $500 Alfond Grant to help pay for college, trade school or other post-high school education.
